The Program: The exchange program with Bogaziçi Üniversitesi provides graduate students in the Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL with the experience of living and studying in Istanbul while continuing their progress toward a degree at Georgia State University. Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204) and (1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). Very recently, the city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. It is the only city in the world located on two continents, Asia and Europe. Connecting these continents via bridges, the city also links such historic buildings as Hagia Sophia, a 540-year-old- Grand Bazaar, and Topkapi Palace with contemporary American touches such as Starbucks. Located in the area of Bebek overlooking the Bosphorus, Bogaziçi Üniversitesi is one of the most respected universities in Turkey. Students in this program have the opportunity to take graduate applied linguistics courses taught in English in the Foreign Language Education Department. Students are encouraged to also study Turkish at Bogaziçi Üniversitesi and if possible, to take at least one Turkish language course at GSU before they travel. For more information, please go to the Middle East Institute's website at http://www.cas.gsu.edu/mei/ or contact the Turkish instructor, Nur Yigitoglu, at email@example.com.
The fall term begins mid-September and the spring term begins in February. Students may refer to the website for additional information http://www.boun.edu.tr/index_eng.html
