THE PROGRAMThis program provides students with a unique study abroad opportunity that will give them experience in ethnographic methods and anthropological theory in the challenging and interesting metropolitan setting of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Applied, urban, and medical anthropology are the major foci of the program. Through visits to public health clinics, nongovernmental organization (NGO) programs, and schools and community centers in different favelas (shantytowns), students will gain firsthand knowledge of how social stratification translates to disparities in health, education, and standard of living. Students will assist with the projects of the Instituto Dois Irmãos (i2i), an organization that provides educational opportunities to residents of Rocinha, the largest favela community in Brazil. Students will attend guest lectures by Brazilian researchers and NGO directors. In addition, students will have a chance to explore the city independently and through organized trips to major landmarks such as Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado, to samba clubs, to museums, and to the Northeastern Fair (a large fair held every weekend in Rio that highlights the music, food, and literature of the Northeast of Brazil).
