Ariel Who Should Apply

Applications are welcome from students who have achieved at least a 3.0 GPA. Students must have completed at least 1 year of full-time university study by the time of study abroad. University of Manchester offers a wide range of options for students wishing to spend a semester or a year studying abroad. Areas of study include classes in business, arts and humanities, social sciences, engineering, natural sciences, and languages.

Overview

The University of Manchester is one of Europe's top universities, and is internationally recognized for both its teaching quality and research excellence. It is the largest single-campus university in the UK, with approximately 35,500 students. Many of the major advances of the 20th century began at the University, including the development of the world's first programmable computer, and the splitting of the atom. The University campus spans a large area right next to the city center and is dominated by grand buildings, but also has quiet corners, landscaped gardens, cafes, and common rooms. Everything is within easy walking distance.

Academic Highlights

The University of Manchester is ranked number 29 in the world according to the 2008 Times Higher Education Supplement rankings, and number 9 in Europe. In the latest UK Research Assessment Exercise, Manchester was ranked as third in the UK (behind only Cambridge and Oxford) in terms of 'Research Power'. Manchester was ranked top in the country for quality in 6 subject areas, behind only Cambridge (18 subject areas) and Oxford (8 subject areas). The University of Manchester attracts world-renowned researchers and instructors and boasts no fewer than 23 Nobel Prize winners amongst its current and former staff and students.

Location

The city of Manchester is located in the North West of England, approximately 180 miles (2 hours by train) north of London. Manchester is a vibrant, youthful city with a thriving cultural scene and an abundance of theaters, restaurants, museums, music venues and sporting opportunities. The city of Manchester is home to more than 80,000 students in total.

The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester is a city of contrasts, with sparkling new buildings seated right beside restored original cotton mills and historic Victorian buildings and monuments. Manchester is also a great base from which to explore the rest of the UK. The beautiful Lake District, Peak District, and Snowdonia National Parks are all within easy reach, and the North West coast is also less than an hour away. Because of its prime location on the national and international network of airline routes, rail links, and motorways, Manchester operates as a gateway to all areas of the UK and the rest of Europe.

Housing

A full range of University accommodation is guaranteed to all students joining the university for a full academic year. Students joining for a single semester will also be allocated University accommodation if application deadlines are met although en-suite rooms are limited for one semester participants.   Students can choose from either catered or self catered accommodation, as well as from en-suite rooms or shared facilities. All students will have single-study bedrooms with shared living/communal areas. A wide variety of styles of accommodation are available, ranging from modern apartments to traditional collegiate-style halls of residence.

About GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Programs in Europe

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, formerly EuroLearn, programs are created with individual student's goals in mind. Our programs are built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by our amazing staff, both in the U.S. and overseas. Our Discovery Model provides every student with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Our North American staff counsels each student through the application and enrollment process, and our on-site Resident Coordinators set up a calendar of activities for students related to each area of discovery. These activities are more than just tourist excursions, and include opportunities like networking events, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can't find in a travel book.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs in Europe include everything you would expect in a study abroad program: guaranteed housing, 24-hour in-country support, an in-country multi-day orientation program, comprehensive pre-departure services, excursions, and discovery activities to make the most out of each student's experience. Students of all majors are welcome to apply, and no prior language skill is required even for foreign-speaking destinations as some or all courses are taught in English at each university. Scholarships are available.
